combine the two functions above to create meaning for themselves.
The study of neurolinguistics programming seeks to make
conscious the unconscious processing of information by human
beings through careful observation of how individuals make sense
of the raw data of experience. The intent behind NLP is to
activate creative response by individuals or organizations to the
world in which they exist. If you always do what you have always
done, you will usually get what you have always gotten.
Through a series of entertaining exercises in workshop-style
settings, participants are encouraged to: expand their perceptual
skills; recognize existing patterns of communications both within
themselves and with others; interrupt unsuccessful patterns and
expand their repertoire of responses.
The rules of the NLP game include the following:
NLP PRESUPPOSITIONS
Presuppositions are the tacit assumptions individuals hold
concerning the truth about reality . Since the ultimate truth
about reality is beyond our comprehension, the best we can do is
make guesses about the unknown. Some of the answers are furnished
by our cultures; others are made up by the individual as they go
along. Most people tend to forget that they are guesses and live
as if they were true. These guesses set the range and the limits
of what is possible. The NLP model is built on the
presuppositions listed below. To test a presupposition, act as if
it were true and discover the effect it has. The best way to find
out whether something is useful is to use it.
- All of our experiences are encoded in our neurology (the
brain and nervous system).
- Subjective experience is composed of images, sounds,
feelings, smells and tastes.
- Mind and body are part of the same cybernetic system.
Anything that happens in one part of the system will
necessarily affect all other parts of the system.
- People operate out of their internal maps, and not out of
sensory experience. That is, people act according to how
they interpret the world, and not as it actually is.
- The map is not the territory. The explanation--or
metaphor--used to relate facts about a person is not the
person. The territory or the person is much greater than
the map.
- All messages--verbal and nonverbal--from the person with
whom you re communicating are important and worthy of
respect.
- Always give people a choice. Never try to take choice
away.
- The resources people need always lie within their
personal history, although often hidden in the
unconscious.
- People respond most readily when you meet them in terms
of their internal map of the world.
- The person who s most flexible--who has the most
choices--will control the interaction: requisite variety.
- Small tasks or bits are easier to manage. So, if a task
is difficult, chunk it down.
- Change can be fast and generative, if the people who are
involved have a model of the world which includes that
possibility.
- All behaviour is a communication. A person can t not
respond. Even no response is a response, albeit an
ambiguous one.
- Content is less important than process. When
troubleshooting, altering how something occurs is more
important than altering the individual outcome.
- There is no failure in communication, only feedback. If
what you are doing is not working, do something
different.
- The meaning of a communication is the response it
elicits, regardless of the intention.
- Usefulness is more important than truthfulness.
- People can change their physiology and emotions by
changing their minds.
- Anything one person can do, others can also learn to do.
Human skills are learnable.
NLP belongs to the family
of philosophical psychology known under the general term
of constructivism. Constructivism is an epistemology that
proposes that all of our ideas about reality (our
knowledge and belief systems) are interpretations of
immediate experience.
Early concepts that gained influence in the field
recognized the importance of language in shaping reality.
With its scientific inheritance, neurolinguistics
programming (NLP) developed as one of many systems that
attempted to break out of a narrow view of human
behaviour, returning to the individual the possibility of
constructing a personal experience and reality. In the
past two decades there has been an upsurge of a great
variety of approaches to understanding human experience,
most of which were unscientific and non- logical and thus
met with resistance from traditional bodies of
psychology. The increasing influence of constructivism
was seen to be a threat against the social order (e.g.,
creation-centered spirituality threatened the traditional
Christian church, and holistic health threatened the
traditional medical model.
